New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, was not quick to announce this decision promptly following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
