The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
