New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
