Figures from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
This is a appalling and despicable statement,ā said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. She referenced previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, thereās a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the killing of a different individual.
Providing a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
