France to begin intercepting migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
