Witness testimonies emerged of several detonations and the noise of low-flying planes in Caracas in the early hours of Saturday morning. The situation has prompted allegations from Venezuela's leadership and demands for international scrutiny.
The socialist administration has condemned the United States of committing "foreign aggression," stating that ex- President Donald Trump allegedly ordered attacks against the South American nation. In an public declaration, the authorities confirmed that strikes had impacted Caracas and three other states: Miranda, La Guaira state, and Aragua state.
"Our only objective of this aggression is to seize control of Venezuela's natural resources, especially its petroleum and mineral wealth," Venezuela asserted.
The government urged the world to condemn the operations, which it labeled a "clear infringement of global law" that placed millions of lives in danger.
Residents described hearing approximately multiple powerful blasts around 2:00 AM in the morning. Residents in different areas allegedly rushed into the streets.
"The earth trembled. This is terrifying. We experienced explosions and planes in the sky," commented one resident.
Plumes of smoke was reported billowing from two defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where leader Nicolás Maduro is reported to live.
The leader of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, claimed on a social platform that "At this moment they are attacking Caracas... bombing it with rockets." He demanded an swift emergency meeting of the Security Council.
Colombia, which recently became a member of the Security Council, announced it would activate operational plans at its shared border with Venezuela.
The reported attacks come after a prolonged military buildup by the US against the Maduro government. Beginning in last summer, authorities reported a substantial US military buildup off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a series of airstrikes on boats linked to drug trafficking.
The administration has announced "the implementation of external disturbance" and commanded all national defence protocols to be activated. It has also urged its supporters to protest and "repudiate this imperialist aggression."
US authorities and the US Department of Defense have not publicly responded to requests for clarification regarding the allegations.
