At least 16 persons have perished after a massive fire erupted at a apparel factory in Bangladesh, with authorities warning that the fatality count could rise.
16 bodies have been retrieved but were incinerated impossible to identify, the fire service reported.
Distraught relatives gathered outside the four-level factory in Mirpur, Dhaka on that day in seeking their family members still missing.
The fire, which broke out at the factory around lunchtime, was brought under control after several hours. But an neighboring chemical warehouse continued to burn, emergency services confirmed.
Until 21:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday, the fire at the chemical warehouse had not been fully extinguished, journalistic accounts said.
Emergency responders have not ascertained which of the two buildings caught fire first.
Based on bystanders, the chemical warehouse stored industrial bleaches, plastic materials and chemical peroxide, all of which can accelerate fires. Plastic also releases poisonous gases when combusted.
Security personnel are still trying to locate the proprietors of the factory and the warehouse, emergency services head the department director informed reporters.
An investigation on whether the warehouse was operating legally is also in progress, he mentioned.
Tearful family members waited outside the burned buildings, many of them clutching photographs of their lost relatives.
Among them is a man looking frantically for his daughter, his loved one.
"When I heard about the fire, I came running. But I still have been unable to find her... I just want my daughter back," he expressed to news media.
