Cameroon Political Opposition Leader Faces Court Action Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Government Declares

Political Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has secured an eighth presidential term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has declared that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over allegations that he provoked "violent post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during confrontations between security forces and demonstrators since the electoral process on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 winning an eighth consecutive term.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he emerged victorious, a statement disputed by the incumbent party, the ruling CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by security personnel on protesters have alarmed the world leaders, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union calling for caution.

Official's Accusations

Recently, Nji charged the opposition figure of organising what he referred to as "unauthorized" rallies leading to the deaths, and also condemned him for declaring victory in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "accomplices responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

Cameroon's leader, who took control in 1982 and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the 12 October election with 53.7% of the ballots, compared to just over a third for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the authorities' move to try him, but he had previously stated that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

When results were announced, he claimed that armed men opened fire on protesters assembled near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 people.

Inquiry Announced

Earlier this week, the interior minister disclosed that an probe would be started into violent incidents before and after the declaration of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved lost their lives," he said, without offering a specific number of demonstrators who have been killed in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that several personnel of the law enforcement also sustained serious injuries.

Current Situation

Even though the interior minister asserted the condition throughout Cameroon was now stable, demonstrators continue to protest in various areas of the country, especially in these two cities, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on that day, and set fire to rubber on the streets.

Observers caution that the political turmoil could lead the nation into a governmental instability.
