Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
